Knitters Do It In Public

WORLD WIDE KNIT IN PUBLIC DAY IS SATURDAY JUNE 14th 2008

Geneva, IL, June 3, 2008: Wool and Company, a knitting and crochet store serving the western suburbs of Chicago, is delighted to announce that it will be hosting a World Wide Knit in Public Day (WWKiP) in downtown Geneva on Saturday, June 14th at 1pm.

Started in 2005 by Danielle Landes, WWKiP is a way for knitters to come together and enjoy each other's company. Knitting can be a solitary act and it's easy to knit alone and sink into your work without thinking about all the other knitters out there. Neighbors could spend all their lives never knowing that the other knits. This is a specific day to get out of the house and go to a local event (with knitting in tow) and meet other knitters.

WWKiP Day is unique, in that it's the largest knitter run event in the world.  Each local event is put together by a volunteer or a group of volunteers.  They each organize an event because they want to, not because they have to.  They bring their own fresh ideas into planning where the event should be held, and what people would like to do.

WWKiP Day is really about showing the general public that knitting can be a community activity in a very distinct way.  In some places there are different knitting groups that never interact with each other, on WWKiP Day they come together in one place, making them hard to miss.

Wool and Company owner, Lesley Edmondson said, "Knitters of all ages and abilities are invited to come, with their lawn chairs, knitting and lunch and sit in front of the store, weather permitting, and knit.   We shall have some drawings and prizes for the event and it will be wonderful for Geneva to see so many knitters enjoying what they do best, but in public for change. We will also have staff on hand to teach beginners at 2pm and 3pm, so everyone is welcome".
